My 2018 Water Fast has been INCREDIBLE – Part 3

Time alters while fasting

One of the coolest things about fasting is the amount of extra time you get. It is wonderful. Time seems to slow so if you feel you never have enough time for anything, then you will find fasting completely alters this perception. You do not have to prepare breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks, so all that time (two to three hours each day) becomes available. You can read more, do things that have been put off for ages, visit people, and so on. If vegetable fasting then you just make your daily juice mix and off you go! Fasting is refreshing to mind, body and soul. During and after fasting, your personal experience of your body, your ‘spirituality’ and creativity, as it were, is vastly enhanced and elevated. This alone is worth the experience. You sleep less, you are more awake, and you are more alive. You are hungrier for life!


Do not fear hunger, nothing but good will come of it. The greatest musicians, artists and leaders always did their best work when they were ‘still hungry’. The best piece of advice actor Morgan Freeman ever gave to Samuel L. Jackson was to ‘stay hungry’. Limbic hunger refers to the limbic system of the brain, which is where your instinctive behaviors reside. Somatic hunger means ‘of the body’ or the sensation of ‘tummy rumbling’. When you fast for more than three days this alters, and you really start to see how little food you actually need. Don’t worry, your body’s hunger cycle ultimately adjusts. When you are fasting, ignore the hunger pangs and they will subside within 30–45 minutes as the body begins to break down some of its stored fats for energy.

Almost everyone can fast

As a general rule, the more toxic you are when you start a fast, the worse you may feel. If you have been overeating, living on junk foods, eating lots of constipating meats and dairy products, or using pharmaceutical drugs, you should go very slowly with fasting and, for your first time, attempt only one day. If you eat mostly healthy foods, fasting is surprisingly no big deal and can often be a pleasant experience.

Expect good moments and bad while fasting. I have watched people on their first fast glide through effortlessly, full of energy and vitality, feeling exhilarated and liberated. I have watched others lose body heat, get headaches, fatigue, nausea, excess mucous, symptoms of influenza or a cold, and experience perspiration, hunger pangs, bad breath, dark urine, skin eruptions, dizziness, nausea, palpitations, muscle pains, cramps, diarrhea, flatus, irregularities of the heart, increased body odour and a tongue that takes on a concentrated furriness, not to mention the extreme emotions!
